The New York Times advertisement for Firefox 1.0 runs today. The initial goal was to pay for it by raising 2,500 contributions in 10 days. They ended up with $250,000 raised by 10,000 contributors.

You’re right in describing it as search on steroids!!
I’m more into searching domain-specific information (IMDB.com for movies, Amazon.com for books, Bartleby.com for literature, Wikipedia.org for general knowledge, etc.) than just throwing a query at google and opening the first bunch of results..
